My Podcast Journey Starts Here

Time to take the leap

Earlier this year, I made the decision to start a podcast and I called it Casual Nonsense. At the time of this writing, we are about 4 months in, which is just about 20 episodes.  Who knew that I could do this?

Casual Nonsense is a podcast about everything and nothing, all at the same time. It’s been referred to as the Seinfeld of podcasts. A show about nothing. I’ll take that reference all day (and the success please!) I bring on different guest most every episode, and I talk about whatever they have going on. Maybe they are an expert in marketing, or promoting a book, or we just shoot the shit and talk about everyday life. Some of the topics are small business, movies, sports, finance. The goal is to keep the listeners entertained or educated. Hopefully a little of both.

I am not really someone who will walk up to someone and just start talking. I am not that guy. But, with the podcast, it’s almost like I can go to another place and be that person anytime I want. I like to think that I’ve always had a personality and can hold a conversation, but not that of an overbearing salesman, or the extra witty, stand-up comic who always seems to have the right thing to say, at just the right time. No sir. My brain doesn’t always work that way. Maybe when I get a little alcohol involved, I get closer to Vince Vaughn level, but that could just be in my head.

The Concept

This journey started out to be a movie review podcast. I love most all movies. Let me rephrase that, I have an opinion on most movies. My favorite era has got to be the 90’s and early 2000’s action flicks. Just mindless entertainment with cheesy one-liners. I’ll take those all day long. Totally rewatchable.

Myself, and two buddies, Lord Bouz & Cousin Sean, put a few ideas together and started the research. About a month or so into the research, I decided to pivot and switch to the format that it is now. I am happy that I did, as I have more freedom to do whatever I want. Currently, Lord Bouz & Cousin Sean make frequent appearances on the show and drop their skills. You can check out this collaboration here, as we talk about Zombies and would we actually make it.

Did you know that most podcasts don’t get past a 7th episode? When you, or me, or anyone, make the decision to start a podcast, you should have some sort of long term plan. At least 12% of plan? I’ll discuss this more in detail in another post, but for me, I tried to envision where I might be, or where I’d like to be 6 months to a year from day 1. I set a few expectations and tried to stay true to them. I have had to make a few adjustments along the way, but the direction is mostly the same. Talk as much nonsense as I can!

So, why do it?

Which leads to the actual question on the table here. Why did I start a podcast? The answer is, why not? For me, I have an eclectic mix of personality traits, or issues, depending on your point of view. I have an inner fire to run my own business. I do have, what I feel, is a decent personality that I like to exploit. Hanging out with cool and interesting people is super enjoyable. I really like helping people and lifting them up the best I can. Over the course of my life I’ve been helped more times that I can count. If a podcast gives me the outlet to, talk nonsense, help others, and allow me pay that forward and lend a helping hand, even a little, count me in. I do believe in Karma, but most of all, I have opinions and I talk to too much. There. I said it.

A podcast gives me an outlet to handle of these things, all wrapped up into one bundle of entertainment

If you have the chance, I’d love you to give the podcast a listen. Feel free to provide any feedback you’d like, good or bad, as I am always looking to improve on my craft. We can be found on pretty much all podcast streaming services. Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Google…. you name it.

What would you need to start your own podcast? I have a few ideas that may help you get started here.
